My God! Someone's actually made a cyborg! - After years of sci-fi nuts and phoney professors claiming they have built a cyborg - part machine, part living tissue - it would appear that someone has actually done it. It can't do very much and it's incredible inefficient but it actually does use biological material to communicate with machinery to some practical end. What is it? The brain stem of a bloodsucking fish called a lamprey stuck in an oxygenated salt solution and connected to a robot. What does it do? Detect light and then turn to face it. If a light shines on it, the brain sends out an electronic pulse. This is sent through a microprocessor which causes the robots wheels to move and face the light source. OPTOBIONICS? CORPORATION - Optobionics Corporation is developing the Artificial Silicon Retina? (ASR) was invented by brothers Alan and Vincent Chow, who are also the co-founders of Optobionics Corporation. (Added: 28-Nov-2000 Hits: 971 Rating: 10.00 Votes: 1 ) [Rate It] [Broken Link]
Robo-eels, critters on chips lead cyborg pack - In Chicago, researchers have fused the brain of a primitive lamprey eel with a robot the size of a hockey puck, creating a living machine that tracks a beam of light in a laboratory ring, like a miniature bull chasing a matador's red cape. (May 8, 2001, CNN.com) (Added: 10-May-2001 Hits: 1009 Rating: 0 Votes: 0 ) [Rate It] [Broken Link]
Robo-roach Cybernetically Enhanced Bugs - The pulse-emitting backpack sends signals to the host cockroach through electrodes, causing it to turn left, right, run forward or back. (Vnunet.com, Sept. 25, 2001) (Added: 26-Sep-2001 Hits: 897 Rating: 9.00 Votes: 1 ) [Rate It] [Broken Link]
Robot with living brain created in US - Researchers in Chicago have built a cyborg, a half-living, half-robot creature which connects the brain of an eel-like fish to a computer and is capable of moving towards lights. (Added: 17-Apr-2001 Hits: 1169 Rating: 10.00 Votes: 1 ) [Rate It] [Broken Link]
